Signed Off

When I first read about new age "virtual campaigns" I was hyped. My first happy thought was not having to view the landscape pollution during campaigns where every corner, boulevard and lamppost is littered with signage. I thought voters would be able to communicate with candidates and become engaged in the process. I was hopeful that it meant voters, with easy access to candidates, would make their decisions based on candidates' positions on issues. Then I discovered online lawn signs. It still disturbs me to think that we might elect people based on how much signage they can post, both off and online. The upside to the virtual campaign is that I am not forced to see the online signage.

(Oct. 20/09) Brian Storey of Pelican Signs said: "Election signs aren't the most interesting in the business because you don't use a lot of creativity." Nor do most candidates.

What does that say about us, the voting public?

  1. what is an online lawn sign - what are you talking about - this makes no sense??

  2. You have 8 followers on your blog, most online candidates have less than 100 followers and you are naive enough to think that a candidate is not going to put up real signs???

  3. Anonymous #1 - Hey, the concept of online lawn signs was new to me too. Cool. Check Facebook and Twitter and post for your favorite. Last time SP did a report on this Derek Rope was winning on Facebbok. Stats change quickly. Check it out.

  4. Anonymous #2 - Perhaps I was unclear. I absolutely believe they are going to put up signs. It works. What concerns me is that people are not engaging in election issues - at any level of government - and making decisions on which candidate best represents their views - they may just be counting lawn signs. I think that is pathetic. As for my followers (Bless them one and all!) I'm not running for anything. No one need come to this site. But feel free to sign up.

  5. You are right signs work, and the level of voter apathy "because things are going well" is extremely frustrating. Get involved people it is your city.
So mistress what do you think of candidates using the logo of the office they are running for in there flyers. Like James running in Ward 3 for Public School trustee.

  6. If you are saying that candidate James Yachysen is using the division's logo on his material then the Public School Board should be on him for unauthorized use. It puts the division in a very dicey position should the candidate elude to something that violates the policy or position of the division.

And I hope the voters send him a message for his duplicitous conduct.

  7. What happens when they don't send him a message or Darren Hill a message? Carol and you use the line we will see what kind of representation residents want come the election? What happens if voters reject Carol? Is she going to insult the ward residents?

  8. Only an NDP shill could see voter choice as an insult. If your sensibilities are injured by my comments there's an exit button on this blog sport - feel free to use it.

  9. I asked if Carol is defeated if she would insult ward residents based on her line she can't wait to see what kind of representation the ward wants. I see voter choice as a great thing and voter choice is the reason Charlie Clark is now on council.

  10. If residents want an honest, hard-working, willing to-meet-the-people canadidate, they will vote for Carol. If they want what the other candidate has to offer, they can make their choice. Democracy is a beautiful thing.

  12. How typically NDP to resort to a personal attack when defeated by logic. You are correct Anon Charlie Clark is now on council due to voter choice. It always seems that voter choice is why the left wing wins, yet when a left wing candidate loses it is never due to the 'voter choice'.

I have several friends close to Mr. Clark and I in fact worked on his campaign when he was elected (sorry Mistress, was more out of friendship than political views). While yes Charlie is there by voter choice, the impact of the NDP on his municipal campaign cannot be overlooked. For anyone that helped out they can attest the level of commitment that the party had to helping Charlie get elected (I don't blame them for a second, Charlie is a articulate person that I assume they one day see running Provincially and are grooming him in civic politics first).

So yes voter choice is great, but the lets refrain from using it in personal attacks. One can easily be reminded that the left leaning NDP has never been the voter's choice to run this great country.
